Synopsis

Some things are lost. Some are taken. And some are hidden on purpose — and wait, patiently, for exactly the right person to come and find them.

Clara Finch has spent six years being the most replaceable woman in Boston: a brilliant archivist quietly made obsolete by a scanner. So when a bookshop on the foggy coast of Maine advertises for someone who simply cannot stand not knowing what a thing is, she packs three taped boxes and drives north to a town whose population is listed, hopefully, as approximately.

The Barnacle & Book is everything she didn't know she was missing — a converted lighthouse full of old paper and sea air, an owner who writes letters to his late wife, a baker who insults everyone he loves, and a cat with strong opinions. Then a forgotten crate gives up a sea captain's logbook from 1894, and tucked inside, in a hand no one has read in a century, are three riddles.

A developer in a very good coat wants the lighthouse, the harbour, and the whole slowly-emptying town. He is patient, and polite, and entirely legal — and he has very nearly won. But the captain who built this place left a trail: a compass that still points true, an iron key, a promise sealed in wax, scattered across the town for someone willing to look differently and brave enough to follow it through fog and tide and one truly terrible storm.

To save a town she's only just learned to love, Clara must read what no one else can, trust a boatwright with a secret of his own, and discover that the most important things were never really lost.

They were only ever being kept — in common, for those to come.

A warm, witty, treasure-hunting cozy mystery about belonging, second chances, and a town that keeps itself lit for one another.
